Although scars never completely disappear, there are diverse surgical and non-surgical methods to make them less evident or even imperceptible. Hypertrophic, keloid or wide scars can be resected (removed) by surgery.
Extensive scars might require tissue from other areas to cover the effect of their removal. This can be obtained though flaps or grafts, which are the basis of plastic surgery. Recovery time varies according to the extension and complexity of the procedure.
Non-surgical methods are also used complementary to surgery to avoid hypertrophic (high relief) recurrence. These methods are: radiotherapy, laser, dermabrasion, compression garments, intrawound corticoid injection, silicone gel dressing and topical ointments.
